Construction Update

Dear Families,

As we come to the end of the school year, we wanted to update you on the construction work to date and look ahead to next year.

As many of you know, the hard winter meant that construction and abatement did not take place on many days during the winter. We anticipated this (which was why we pushed for construction to begin in the summer—or at least spring). Having consistently brought this up to the SCA Project Manager, we secured verbal guarantees that we will be able to remain in the building until at least 6 p.m. once the 2014-2015 School Year begins. All abatement is scheduled to be completed prior to the beginning of school in September. Any remaining abatement will be completed after 6 p.m. and on weekends. Both University Settlement and Wingspan will be back in the building in September 2014. We have been given continued verbal assurances that the entire project is still set to end October 2015.

The good news is that abatement is now done in the courtyard and on 4th street and the majority of the remaining abatement will happen during the summer and be completed before the fall. Our custodians clean and check rooms every night for dust and will continue to do so until construction is complete. Currently, abatement is taking place on Third Street and new bricks are replacing old ones. Many of the terra cotta decorative elements have been removed and sent for casting and at least half of the basement waterproofing is complete. That all said we still have concerns. EVERYONE can help by voicing these concerns to 311.

Please be sure to GET YOUR TICKET COMPLAINT NUMBER! There is a public record kept and it is a great way to hold people accountable. SEND COMPLAINT NUMBERS to tnshsc@gmail.com.

1) Continued lack of communication and transparency, for example- the SCA has still not secured the finalized renegotiated contract with the third party construction crew - Kafka, which leaves the schools without the required calendar of work schedule. Without a set calendar date, CONSTRUCTION COULD GO PAST OCT 2015!!!

2) Recently, the SCA also failed to inform our custodians and principals that air conditioners were removed from windows, leaving large holes in the safety guards on the 4th floor and potentially jeopardizing the safety of our children. OUR CHILDREN AND PEDESTRIANS CAN GET HURT! We need to be assured that our children are safe under ALL aspects of the construction process.

NOTE: Ticket complaint numbers from 311 will help us in our efforts to get the street closed for recess access so please make sure to call 311 about our rights to safety, transparency and a guaranteed construction schedule (and get a complaint number THIS WEEK!

We will continue to send updates as we have new information to share. Thank you all for your assistance in contacting the officials who can help us!

If you have questions for us please email tnshsc@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

The Health & Safety Committee
