Week of November 6, 2017

Dear Neighborhood School Families,

I turned off the news last night so that my soon-to-be 11 year old didn’t hear about shootings in Texas when I did; I needed to digest and figure out how to talk with her about another act of terror.  Young children feel safe when we provide containing information:  the gunman in Texas is dead so he can’t hurt anymore people.  You are safe at school.  For older kids, it’s about acknowledging that there have been dangerous times throughout history, but there have always been people who worked to make the world safer.  I think that this is an opportunity for kids to talk and think about ways to make our school and community feel safe.

Please join me for my Morning Hour Thursday at 8:35 a.m. in the PTA Room.  We  will continue our discussion about progressive education and what it looks like at TNS.  Please take a few minutes to read the Alfie Kohn article, What to Look for in a Classroom.  We will visit classrooms as a part of this morning hour.

It’s almost family conference time.  Twice each year, in November and again in March, we hold family conferences.  In our early childhood classes, it is an opportunity for teachers, together with the child, to talk with the adults in each child’s family about the child’s work and progress in school.  In our upper grades, children lead conferences, speaking about their work alongside teachers and their adults.  Conferences will be held the evening of Wednesday, November 15th and in the afternoon on Thursday, November 16th (dismissal is at 11:45 AM).

Mark Your Calendars:

  • TNS staff and families have formed a Relief for Puerto Rico Committee in response to Hurricane Maria.  This week is “battery week”.

  • There is NO SCHOOL Tuesday, November 7th.  This is a professional development day for teachers and paraprofessionals.

  • Action for Healthy Kids and Go Go Squeez is sponsoring a Day of Service at TNS on Thursday, from 3 - 7 p.m.    We will paint the small and large cafeteria, add stenciling to the courtyard, sort new equipment for P.E., build a new scooter rack and install a climbing wall in the 4th floor gym.  We have a lot planned, but can’t do it without some TNS parent volunteers, too.   Please sign-up to help, either the day of or to help ahead of time.   Childcare is available for TNS students from 2:45 - 6 p.m.

  • Our PTA Executive meeting is Wednesday at 8:35 AM in the PTA Room.  This meeting is open to all.

  • The Wellness Committee meets Friday at drop-off in the small cafeteria.

  • We have Picture Day retakes and sibling pictures Friday.

Warmly,

Dyanthe
