Week of May 21, 2018

Dear Neighborhood School Families,

We are beginning to work on class configurations for next year.  This is a thoughtful process: teachers describe each child as we carefully consider the makeup of each class at the school.  We strive to have well-balanced classes and consider gender, ethnicity, friendships, academics, and the social and emotional dynamics of the group. We are sending home a form this week to invite you to let me or your current teacher know if there is anything you’d like us to consider in making your child’s placement for next year.  We will be in clear communication with families about any changes in class placement before the end of the school year. When we plan the classes and spaces for September, we also need to know who will or might be leaving.  Please let me or Noemi know as soon as possible if your child is not returning to TNS next year.

Mark your calendars:

  • Practical Tips for Preparing your 5th Grader for Middle School:  Our Occupational Therapist, Emily and parent Nanine will facilitate a workshop for 5th grade families Tuesday at drop-off in Room 301.

  • Third Street Music Share: Our Pre-K - 2nd graders will share the work that they have done in music this year Wednesday at 8:45AM in the auditorium for families and the rest of the school.  Please join us!

  • Please join us for Rhythm and Rice Wednesday from 4 - 7PM in the courtyard.  Bring your family’s favorite rice dish to share.

  • The 4th Grade NYS Science Performance Test is Thursday and Friday.  This assessment is hands-on: students perform different kinds of experiments related to the content they have been learning in Science with Emily.  The NYS Written Science Test is Monday, June 4.  If you do not want your child tested, please send a note with your child’s name and teacher indicating that you would like your child to “opt out” of the NYS Science Test.

  • How can parents help children better understand their growing bodies, foster healthy social and communication skills, and have respect for others?  Barbara DiGangi from Families Thriving will facilitate a workshop for families Thursday from 5 - 6PM in Room 304.

Warmly,

Dyanthe
