Week of 5.16.22

Dear Families,

I am sure you are reeling from the horrific, racist mass shooting in Buffalo yesterday and the shootings at a church in California yesterday.  Once again, we are left with feelings of grief, fear, and anger.  Please monitor the information your child is exposed to and turn the news off when children are in earshot.  Teachers will support children if they bring it up in class.  Here are the guidelines we use, and I encourage you to as well.  Listen carefully to what children are asking: find out what they know, have heard, or have seen.  Provide containing information: Here is what we know. Find out what children are wondering. (Why? How? etc.).  Talk about your family’s efforts to fight prejudice, racism, and value differences. Think together about things your family can do in response or to help. Embrace Race has created a manageable and valuable set of resources for families called Supporting Kids through Racialized Violence to support having honest, thoughtful, informed discussions with the children.

Saturday, from 11 AM - 3 PM, is Spring Neighborhood Day!  Parents will lead activities like zine-making, silkscreening, time capsule recording, car derby, box maze, and more! Parent Somaliah will lead a somatic workshop in the garden at noon.  We have a parent-led Sing at 1 PM.

On Tuesday, May 24, from 3:30 - 5 PM, Studio in a School will host an open studio for families to view all the beautiful artwork children have created with Josh and Mildor this year.  Please save the date!

Finally, Friday is a TNS half-day for professional development.  Dismissal is at 11:45 AM.

Warmly,

Dyanthe
