Applying
In New York City, children are eligible to apply to Pre-K in the year they turn four, and Kindergarten in the year they turn five. New York City families can apply to Kindergarten online at MySchools, over the phone, or in person at a Family Welcome Center. All Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten applications are processed according to the DOE admissions priorities. Admission is NOT granted on a first-come first-served basis. We do not keep and use applications from the previous year. Each year new applications are collected for the following school year.
The Neighborhood School is a Pre-K- 5th grade progressive school located in Manhattan District 1. We are a Diversity in Admissions and Choice District. District 1 schools give priority to two groups of applicants. The percentage of seats prioritized for each group is based on the applicant pool and changes each year.
Group 1 —applicants eligible for Free or Reduced Price Lunch (based on family income), living in temporary housing, and/or who were Emerging Multilingual Learners
Group 2 —applicants who did not fall into any of the above categories
As a District of Choice, District 1 does not have zoned elementary schools. Any family living in NYC can apply. If you do not live in NYC go to this link for information for non-resident enrollment. Siblings of children who already attend The Neighborhood School are given first priority for admission. Children who reside in District 1 are given priority for admission.
