Welcome to The Neighborhood School! This guide will help you get settled and feel at home in our community.
Getting Started
Complete your emergency contacts: Fill out the emergency contact form so the school can reach you or a trusted adult in case of an emergency.
Sign up for Konstella: This is our primary communication platform. You'll receive school announcements, event invitations, and class updates here. Ask your class parent or the parent coordinator for an invite.
Set up your NYC Schools Account: Visit schoolsaccount.nyc to manage your child's enrollment, view report cards, and access DOE resources.
Daily Routines
Drop-off: Doors open at 8:00 AM. Students line up in the schoolyard and are escorted to their classrooms by their teachers.
Pick-up: Dismissal is at 2:40 PM (11:45 AM on half days). Students are released from the schoolyard to authorized adults.
Absences: If your child is absent, report it through the Absence Form on our website so the school has a record.
Lunch: Free lunch is available to all NYC public school students. View menus at schools.nyc.gov/school-life/food/menus.
Multi-Age Classrooms
TNS uses multi-age groupings (K-1, 2-3, 4-5), meaning your child will have the same teacher for two years. In the first year, they learn from older peers. In the second year, they become mentors and leaders. This structure builds confidence, empathy, and deeper learning.
Assessments
TNS uses narrative-based assessments rather than traditional letter grades. During parent-teacher conferences, your child participates in sharing their learning journey with you — a practice unique to our school that builds self-awareness and ownership of learning.
Getting Involved
Every parent is automatically a PTA member. There's no separate registration or fee required. Here are some ways to get involved:
• Attend PTA meetings (alternating morning in-person and evening Zoom)
• Become a class parent
• Volunteer at events (bake sales, movie nights, field trip chaperoning)
• Join a committee (fundraising, events, advocacy, wellness, diversity)
• Share a professional skill or cultural tradition
