Our K/1 classrooms bring together kindergarteners and first graders for a dynamic learning experience. Younger students benefit from the modeling of older peers; older students deepen their understanding by helping and teaching. Children engage in project-based learning, develop reading and writing skills, and build a strong mathematical foundation.

Literacy & Language Arts
K/1 students learn to read and write through a balance of phonics, shared reading, independent practice, and writing workshop. They write their own stories, nonfiction pieces, and poems, and read books at their own level every day.
Mathematics
Children build number sense, place value, and early operations through games, manipulatives, and real-world problems. They learn to explain their thinking and try multiple strategies.
Science
Hands-on science investigations -- of weather, living things, materials, and motion -- give K/1 students practice asking questions, observing carefully, and recording what they see.
Social Studies
K/1 social studies focuses on identity, family, neighborhood, and community. Children study the East Village, the people who live and work here, and the shared responsibilities of belonging to a classroom and a city.
The Arts
Through partnerships with Studio in a School, Third Street Music School, and other organizations, K/1 students receive professional instruction in visual art, music, and movement. The arts are tools for thinking and expression -- not extras.
Social-Emotional Learning
Daily classroom meetings, conflict-resolution practices, and a strong culture of care help children build self-awareness, empathy, and the skills to work and play together.
